The Global Hunger Index (GHI) is a tool designed to comprehensively measure and track hunger at global, regional, and national levels, reflecting multiple dimensions of hunger over time. The GHI is intended to raise awareness and understanding of the struggle against hunger, provide a way to compare levels of hunger between countries and regions, and call attention to those areas of the world where hunger levels are highest and where the need for additional efforts to eliminate hunger is greatest. It uses internationally recognized data sources. The GHI was first published in 2006 by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI) and Welthungerhilfe (WHH) and is since published yearly. In 2007 Concern Worldwide became a co-publisher; in 2018, IFPRI withdrew; and in 2024, the Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (IFHV) of the Ruhr University Bochum joined Publisher: Institute for International Law of Peace and Armed Conflict (via Humanitarian Data Exchange (UN OCHA)).
