The Casualty Rate represents the proportion of fatalities among personnel in currently active United Nations peacekeeping operations (PKOs) from 2010 to present, calculated on a semi-annual basis (i.e., by half years). It is calculated by comparing officially reported fatalities, received through the UN’s Notification of Peacekeeper Casualties (NOTICAS) system, to the total number of uniformed personnel contributed by Member States. Rates are expressed per 1,000 personnel and computed only for PKOs that are currently active. The number of active PKOs is dynamically derived from the mission status (currently 11 active PKOs as of 1 December 2025, but this will automatically recalculate if the active missions change). The dataset integrates two official UN sources: Mission Fatalities – Fatalities in PKOs and SPMs since 1948.
